In Think Like an Author Cesar A. Hidalgo (an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT) makes an interesting distinction between ownership and creation.

The supposedly obvious, but almost always overlooked POV is extremely valuable, now more than even. We’re facing further shifts in product paradigms. New consumer habits and emerging technologies demote ownership over the ability to create.

This is not exclusive to media, which has been steadily disrupted by Spotify and similar services. Digital products are likely to follow. Machine learning could introduce a new generation of generative products, which we will need to learn and establish thought leadership around.

In this new reality we will monetize a train of thought, instead of a destination.
